Keeping Things Social

how to make social media… social.

Social media. We all use it. As much as we don’t want to… we care about it. Seeing the number of followers we have increase gives us a little smile. There is an unspoken rule that the blue verification check holds value. There are negative aspects that come along with social media; there is comparison, the pressure to look successful, the need to have the best presets on our pictures- among others. So why do we love it?

I can’t speak for everyone, but there is something special about the ability to make connections with people across the world, from the tip of our fingers. In January 2019, I created an Instagram account for my blog. I started with about 10 followers (consisting of my closest friends and family). I never create goals like “I need to gain 1,000 followers in a month.” Instead, I told myself I would create five meaningful connections each week.

This mindset allowed me to meet some of the most amazing people in my life. I found inspiring women who empowered me to put myself out there. My first few months of creating this account, I thanked EVERY follower I gained and asked for any advice they had. I saw a recurring theme- make genuine connections. I decided I would use social media to BE SOCIAL. I wanted (and continue to) learn, ask questions, and fine inspiration.

There is a quote that says, “comparison is the thief of joy.” I challenge you to use comparison as a tool. Instead of thinking, “why doesn’t my life look like this?” Change your mindset to, “how can I get my life to look the way I want?” We are all on our separate journeys. Let the adventures of others inspire you to go after what you want.

So, I’m going to leave you with this. Take advantage of the resources we have been given. We are lucky enough to be able to connect with people who live on the other side of the country, and even the world. Social media can sometimes feel like a big and overwhelming place, but go out and learn, explore, and be inspired.
